Old, Old, Old

There is a commercial that has been playing in the United States for a while where they invited a group of people to place a dot on a wall to represent the oldest person they ever knew. The dots piled up in the 90’s and 100 year range with some going higher and a few lower. They were trying to sell people on the fact that they could live pretty long into retirement and needed to prepare.

What it did for me was to start thinking about the oldest living person. The oldest person that I know (or at least know well enough to recall their age) is my wife’s grandfather. As of this writing he is 97 and will very shortly be 98. While very old, he doesn’t even make the  Willard Scott Today show shout out for being 100.

Finding out the oldest living person is more difficult than you would think. In many parts of the world, especially 110+ years ago, there was no real way to tell when someone was born. So there are lists of oldest people and then there are lists of oldest people (verified). I’ll count on the verified list.

  • The oldest person (and oldest woman) ever was Jeanne Calment from France, who lived 122 years, 164 days.
  • The oldest man was Jiroemon Kimura from Japan who lived 116 years, 54 days.
  • The person who held the title of the oldest living person for the longest time (a title you can only lose by dying) was Jeanne Calment at 9 years, 205 days . I imagine there were many second place holders that just couldn’t last her out.
  • The person with the shortest reign was Emma Tillman who held the title a mere 4 days.
  • Since 1971 the person with the title was at least 110 years old and since 2012 has been at least 115 years old.

The origins of this dish blow those ages away as it was mentioned in the times of Aristotle.

I had already marinated the pork to get a jump-start on it.

The pork is ready to be skewered.

I used my Fire Wire Grilling Skewers for the task.
