The Ohio Dog

My eldest son, as many of you know, attends The Ohio State University. And while the school is big….very big (over 50,000 students), and there are many activities and interests that students can explore, when there is a home football game, all of the campus focuses on the game.

On one of the first home games, my eldest was walking through the student recreation building and walked by the cafe they have there. Normally they specialize on smoothies and healthy food, but on this day they were offering something special – The Ohio Dog.

Originally created in 2012, the Ohio Dog is an “all beef hot dog is loaded with mashed potatoes, corn, scallions, bacon and barbecue sauce. It is all-natural, gluten-free and contains 50% lower sodium than a regular hot dog. The meat is raised and processed by Ohio State.” Check out the article about it here.

I’m not sure if the attempt to have a signature dog (similar to the Chicago style dog) is admirable or sad, but I do know that I had to try this heart-attack on a bun, so I made it at home when my eldest was home last year.

An over the top hot dog if I ever saw one.

I went with easy with the pre-made mashed potatoes.

Using the Anolon Divided Grill Pan was perfect as the dogs were on the grill side and the corn and bacon was on the skillet side.

It may be a heart attack in a bun, but that’s definitely a risk worth taking!

I’ll have to wear a disguise to try this one but I’m going to try it for sure. (It’ll be on a veggie dog.)

Haha this definitely sounds like an Ohio staple! I was born and raised a buckeye!
